Getting Started

How do I install The Drill Sergeant?

Visit the Chrome Web Store listing and click "Add to Chrome." The extension icon will appear in your browser toolbar. Click it to open the popup and start adding sites to your block list.

Do I need an account to use the extension?

No. The Drill Sergeant works fully offline without an account. Creating a free account lets you sync your block list across multiple devices via the Dashboard.

Which browsers are supported?

The Drill Sergeant is currently available for Google Chrome and Chromium-based browsers (Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera, Vivaldi, etc.) that support Manifest V3 extensions.

Blocking & Features

How do I block a website?

Click the extension icon in your toolbar to open the popup. Type or paste the website URL into the input field and press Enter. The site will be blocked immediately.

Can I block a site on a schedule?

Yes! With a Work Schedule (available on the Unlimited plan), you can define specific hours during which your block list is enforced. Outside those hours, the sites are accessible. Configure schedules in the Dashboard.

What is Hardcore Mode?

Hardcore Mode is an Unlimited feature that prevents you from removing sites from your block list or disabling blocking while it's active. It's designed for moments when you need maximum discipline and can't trust yourself to stay on task.

Why does the blocked page show a drill sergeant message?

That's our signature feature! When you try to visit a blocked site, the Drill Sergeant delivers a firm, no-nonsense motivational message to keep you disciplined. On the Unlimited plan, you can add your own custom messages.

Account & Syncing

How does cross-device sync work?

When you sign in, your block list and settings are stored securely in the cloud. Any changes you make on one device are automatically synced to all your other devices running The Drill Sergeant. Your browsing data is never uploaded — only your configuration.

I signed in but my sites aren't syncing.

Try these steps:

  1. Make sure you're signed into the same account on all devices.
  2. Check that you have an internet connection on both devices.
  3. Open the extension popup and check that your account shows as logged in.
  4. Try signing out and back in from the Dashboard.

Unlimited Plan & Billing

What's included in the Unlimited plan?

The Unlimited plan unlocks:

  • Unlimited blocked sites (Free is limited to 10)
  • Work Schedules — block sites on a timetable
  • Hardcore Mode — lock your settings for maximum discipline
  • Custom Messages — add your own drill sergeant motivations
How do I cancel my subscription?

You can cancel anytime from your Dashboard under account settings. You'll continue to have access to Unlimited features until the end of your current billing period. After that, your account reverts to the Free plan.

Do you offer refunds?

Payments are generally non-refundable as outlined in our Terms of Service. If you believe there's been an error or have extenuating circumstances, please contact us at [email protected] and we'll do our best to help.

Privacy & Data

Does The Drill Sergeant track my browsing?

No. The extension uses a local-first architecture. Blocking decisions are made entirely on your device and your browsing history is never sent to our servers. Read our full Privacy Policy for details.

How do I delete my account and data?

You can delete your account from the Dashboard under account settings. This will permanently remove all your cloud data. Local data stored in the extension will be cleared when you uninstall it.


Troubleshooting

A blocked site is still loading

If a site you've blocked is still accessible:

  1. Make sure blocking is enabled (check the toggle in the popup).
  2. Verify the domain is in your block list (e.g., reddit.com not www.reddit.com/r/something).
  3. Try closing and reopening the tab.
  4. Restart your browser to refresh the extension.

If the problem continues, email us the domain you're trying to block and we'll investigate.

The extension isn't appearing in my toolbar

Chrome may have hidden the icon. Click the puzzle piece icon in the toolbar, find "The Drill Sergeant," and click the pin icon to keep it visible.

I'm getting an error when signing in

Authentication happens via the Dashboard. Try these steps:

  1. Open the Dashboard directly in a new tab.
  2. Sign in with your Google account or email/password.
  3. The extension should detect your session automatically. If not, click "Sign In" in the extension popup — it will redirect you to the Dashboard.
  4. Make sure third-party cookies are not blocked for mydrillsergeant.com.
